Check back in the New Year for more dates!

What to expect

This is the typical layout of a Harmony Social event.

Introductions

Lloyd will start by briefly introducing himself and the people who are supporting the session.

Space will be given for attendees to introduce themselves, but this is by no means mandatory!

When you enter the room, there will be a marker and a roll of address labels for you to jot your name on and wear. We ask everyone to do this so that we don't need to make everyone speak, and it also takes the pressure off remembering everyone's names straight away!

The outline of the session will be given at this point so that everyone knows what to expect.

Warm Up

A key part of taking care of your voice when you are singing is to use a vocal warm up. These practice exercises will be explained and guided, and the whole group can take part in warming up their voices and getting used to singing in the room. The warm up will also include basic singing staples like best-practice breathing and posture.

Unison

The first stop on our journey is to have a go at singing in unison. Don't panic! We're not looking for perfection, we're looking for team work and enjoyment! This will help us all settle into singing as a group and increase confidence in the task. Lloyd will be moving around the group whilst this is happening, helping people to find pitch, good posture and projection and generally having a little listen to you. This will be important for later. If you're very nervous about being listened to, we understand and we will notice, so don't worry!

Rounds

Do you remember singing in rounds as a child? Not to worry if you've never done it! This technique helps us to develop our selective listening skills and identifying where and how to come in within the music. We'll split off into groups (figuratively, not necessarily physically!) and sing in rounds to get us used to having different elements happening at the same time.

BREAK!

Taking a break when you're learning anything is so important. We don't want you going home with a headache or a sore throat! A short break will be taken at this point for everyone to rest their vocal chords and have a chat and get to know each other better!

Before the break, we'll let you know the options of song choice for the second half, so you have some discussion or thinking points before you go!

Choices Choices

When you return to the room, you'll be asked to vote as a group on which song you would like to focus on for the rest of the session. These will be (hopefully) well-known songs, but even if you don't know it, we will have plenty of time to pick it up. Lyric sheets will be given to everyone so they can keep track of the words!

Song Choice Unison

Firstly, we'll learn the 'main' or 'lead' vocal line. This is the one everyone usually hears when they're listening to a song. We'll sing it all together and get the hang of the pitch, the structure and the words.

Harmony Groups

Lloyd will split everyone off into a specific harmony group. One will be lead and the other two will be a harmony part. We will then learn the harmony parts for each group. If you feel that you're struggling, you can always swap to another group! Once we have nailed the harmony parts of the song, we'll try putting it together as a choir!

Swapsies

If there is time to, we'll swap the role of each group around so that everyone can have a chance at each part of the Harmony that we've built together!

At the end of the session, there will be a little talk from Lloyd about what we've all achieved!
